Post-Operative Implant Instructions

Post-Operative Implant Instructions

Postoperatively, bite on moistened gauze rolls for the first 2 hours. An antibiotic of choice is prescribed, and wearing a denture is restricted for approximately 2 weeks. After that time, the denture is carefully adjusted and relined with a soft-material base. It is essential for the healing process that the following directions are observed during the first 2 weeks after the surgery.

Only liquids and mechanically soft foods may be taken during the first 5 days, to avoid contaminating the wound with food particles. Smoking and consumption of alcoholic beverages should be avoided during this time as well.

If possible, an elevated headrest (an extra pillow) should be used during the first 2 nights after the operation, to reduce swelling in the operated areas.

For the first 48 hours following surgery, use ice packs for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off as much as possible during waking hours, then apply heat for up to 72 hours. This will help to limit swelling and bruising over the next week. A bag of frozen peas or corn can be refrozen and can be easily adapted to the face. Do not eat the vegetables after repeated use.

Should any oozing or bleeding occur in the operated jaw, it can usually be stopped by gently biting for 20 minutes on a roll of gauze dressing soaked in saltwater solution. If bleeding still does not stop after this treatment, call our office.

Gentle but thorough warm saltwater rinsing and tooth brushing should be performed. Hygiene promotes healing.

Specific mouth rinses or other disinfectants should not be used unless prescribed or approved by the doctors of California Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center.

Dentures may not be worn until refitting adjustments have been made. Insertion of dentures too early may jeopardize a successful healing process.

If you are in doubt, or if there is any sign whatsoever of disorder related to the healing of the implant area, you are kindly requested to contact our office.
